The letters representing Stefan Kendal Gordy and Skyler Husten Gordy originally stood for "laughing my f---ing ass off," but the name has since been cleaned up to mean "loving my friends and others," since their rise to fame. Stefan is the uncle of Skyler, and their stage names are DJs Redfoo and SkyBlu respectfully. Stefan is eleven years Skyler's senior. Stefan's father is Berry Gordy who founded Motown Records.

Although the style of music is rap, the duo like to call their work party rock, and they write many of their own lyrics. Both members grew up in Pacific Palisades in Los Angeles and formed their group in 2006. They were signed to Interscope in 2008, and the same year released "Party Rock EP" through iTunes. It was 2009 before they released their first album "Party Rock."

"I'm in Miami Bitch" was the first single for the two rappers and it climbed to number 51 on the charts. Their breakthrough in the industry was when they were featured in "Gettin' Over You," an international hit by David Guetta. In 2011, their second album was released, "Sorry for Party Rocking." It features the most successful song LMFAO has had so far in their career, "Party Rock Anthem," which rose to number one on the charts. "Champagne Showers" is the second single release from the album, featuring singer Natalia Kills.
