Legendary singer, Sir Tom Jones, recently released a new album of covers, called "Spirit in the Room". The disc is a collection of enchanting tracks in which Tom Jones has infused his special magic. The selection is broadly diverse. Some of the songs include Sir Paul McCartney's "Come Home (I Want To)", Odetta's "Hit or Miss", Paul Simon's "Love and Blessings", and the popular Leonard Cohen track "Tower of Song". Â
Although Tom is now in his seventies, he is not the sort of person to start slowing down. He recently stated, "I don’t like sitting around too much." As well as still producing music and albums, he is also a judge and mentor on the UK version of The Voice. Â
The "Spirit in the Room" album was created similarly to previous albums, as Tom explained, "... a small amount of musicians, no headphones, no separation, all in one room. Except for the drums, we had to put the girl that played them in a room because drums spill."
Now that the album is out, Tom has released a music video for the track, "Tower Of Song". The clip simply shows Tom sitting alone in a room as he sings the lyrics with his unmistakable voice. He sings the song with heartfelt emotion reflecting on his life detailing the highs and lows of his time as a singer. Like many Leonard Cohen penned songs, this one also tends to be gloomy, but honestly reflective. But unlike some of Tom Jones's songs this song won't have the audience screaming nor having ladies throwing their "unmentionables" at him, as they did back in the sixties and seventies.Â
"Tower Of Song" is about the cold reality of a world class singer's life.
