Okay people, let’s have a reality check. Concerts are loud. When musicians play at concerts, whether they are inside or in the great outdoors, the speakers will be blasting loud music. On top of music AND vocals, the musician is probably going to try to get the crowd as engaged as possible because, well, they want to give you a good show. They want you to have fun. They want you to go home and tell your friends that you just went to the craziest concert and that your city was louder than your rival city. Expecting anything else is like ordering hot coffee and being shocked that it’s, well, hot. Understand? Cool.
Now that we’ve got that squared away, let’s talk about Stacey Wilson Betts, a mother who took her daughter to a Justin Bieber concert in Portland, Oregon almost exactly two years ago.
According to a lawsuit she has filed, she claims that the Biebs pointed to different sections of the audience and (shocker): “enticed the crowd into a frenzy of screams by continuously waving his arms in a quick and upward motion.”
She feels that the “heart-shaped aluminum/steel gondola" that he was sitting on, amplified the sound and delivered a “sound blast” to her ears. As a result, she now suffers from tinnitus, a permanent condition that causes a constant pulsing sound. She says that it also interferes with her ability to sleep.
Betts is asking for $9.23 million in damages from Bieber, his record label, the arena and the concert promoter.
I just want to be clear that I feel extremely bad for this woman and I don’t even want to imagine the effect this has had on her quality of life. That being said, many people wear earplugs to concert because they realize the risk these shows can pose to their hearing. Further, it sounds like this was a horrible fluke and it’s really difficult to sue over an accident when there is a failure to show negligence.
